The Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria (ICEN)

The Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria (I.C.E.N) was established by the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 1990, had the pioneering statutory rights to regulate the practice of Economics in Nigeria and still has these rights today.

Therefore, The Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria (I.C.E.N) was established out of burning desire to promote and encourage the study and development of the art and science of economics in public practice, industries, commerce etc and to inculcate professionalism and specialization in the economics profession in Nigeria. In view of this development, the institute had been mandated by the Act establishing it to regulate the activities of all the different aspects of Economics such as Monetary Economics, Industrial Economics, Business Economics, Educationa and welfare economics, Economics of International relations, Agricultural Economics, Petroleum Economics, etc.

The need to truly professionalise economics makes it imperative for practising economists to acquire deeper knowledge of the job which they are doing. University graduates who have not been professionally trained and who are either economists or preparing to take up economists appointment will need to be trained as professional economists in order to fit well into the job.

Requirements for Admission to Membership

The following persons are qualified for admission as Members of the Institute:
(a) Those who hold a valid Chartered Economists Certificate issued by the Institute;

(b) Those who have passed an examination in economics and related subjects satisfactory to the Board of Directors and Council at an accredited University or College of Technology;

Direct Membership is still open for matured applicants holding B.Sc., M.Ed., M.Sc., Ph.D. Economics or related disciplines with a final grade of above average with 5 years post NYSC work experience with a reputable organisation.
